Couple wants to keep more of sole salary- December 9, 2001
Boston Herald/www.businesstoday.com - Money solution by Philip Sagan, CFP®, CPA, of Philip J. Sagan Financial Consulting

I provided advice to a young, married couple with two children. The husband and wife do not have any debt. However, they have not begun to save for retirement. I recommended the start of either Roth or Traditional IRAs. Money that had been placed in UTMAs should be discontinued. The family income is low enough to make financial aid a strong possibility. UTMAs would undermine effective financial aid planning.

This case involves a young couple in their thirties who enjoy sufficient income but seem unable to save any money. I projected their retirement need and suggested beginning 401(k) plans as well as 529 plans for their children's education, using automatic monthly withdrawals from their checking account.

Couple wonders whether they can retire - November 4, 2001
Boston Herald/www.businesstoday.com - Money solution by Matt Fitzpatrick, CFP®, Enterprise Bank and Trust.

My Herald piece described the financial status of a couple in their 40's who were in a relatively solid situation. Due to their moderate lifestyle, they were honing in on an asset building program that should adequately support their retirement goals. However, their one exposure was their severe case of "portfolio overlap". Like many do-it-yourselfers, they were heavily invested in the large cap growth sector, which of course, has experienced a severe downturn. I recommended some portfolio rebalancing among other suggestions.

Well off but worried about retiring soon - October 28, 2001
Boston Herald/www.businesstoday.com - Money solution by Al Wroblewski, CFP®

Paul,58, and his wife, Mary, 68, pondered when Paul should retire. Paul had an income of $87,500 and Mary was drawing social security of $5,000. What I liked about their situation was the multiple income sources available in retirement. In addition to each of their social security payments, they had rental property, and Paul would receive proceeds from two pensions plus retirement savings. (I love multiple income sources!) Much of what they needed to do was tidying up: view their stock portfolio as an investment not a collection of certificates, revisit their mortgage situation and set up a cash-flow structure to manage their income stream and taxes in retirement. It was a good experience.
