Financial
planning is the process of establishing personal and financial
goals and creating a way to reach them.
The ongoing
process involves taking stock of all your existing resources,
developing a plan to utilize them, and systematically implementing
the plan in order to achieve your short-and long-term goals.
The plan
must be monitored and reviewed periodically so that adjustments
can be made, if necessary, to assure that it continues to
move you toward your financial goals.

The
Financial Planning Association
is the membership organization for the financial planning
community. It was created when the Institute of Certified
Financial Planners (ICFP) and the International Association
for Financial Planning (IAFP) unified on January 1, 2000.
Members include individuals and companies who have contributed
to building the financial planning profession and all those
who champion the financial planning process.
FPA members
are dedicated to supporting the financial planning process
in order to help people achieve their goals and dreams. The
FPA believes that everyone needs objective advice to make
smart financial decisions and that when seeking the advice
of a financial planner, the planner should be a CFP® certificant.
Local
Chapters
A nation wide network of local chapters is the backbone of
the FPA. Each one promotes the advancement of knowledge in
financial planning, supporting programs and projects that
enable members to better serve their clients.
Publications
The FPA’s official publication is the Journal of Financial
Planning. This award winning publication features prominent
writers who cover all aspects of financial planning including
news that shapes the community. Also, the FPA has a web presence
at www.fpanet.org.
FPA’s web presence includes articles, forums, on-line networking,
and substantive information of interest to those who support
the financial planning process.
Consumer
Assistance
The FPA offers services and resources designed to help
the public understand the importance of the financial planning
process and the value of objective advice from a CFP®
professional. Resources include issue-based campaigns designed
to educate consumers about specific personal finance issues,
a service to connect consumers with local CFP® professionals,
web-based consumer information and brochures. Consumers can
visit www.fpanet.org
to access this information. They can also call 1.800.282.PLAN.

| Not every
person who is described as a financial planner holds the CERTIFIED
FINANCIAL PLANNER designation. To earn the CFP® mark,
individuals must meet the continuing education, ethics, examination
and experience prerequisites set by the Certified
Financial Planner Board of Standards, Inc. - the professional
regulatory body, also located in Denver, CO (CFP Board). CFP®
candidates must study and successfully complete a demanding
examination process, administered by the CFP Board, covering
106 topics in six disciplines: asset management, employee benefits,
estate planning, insurance, investing and retirement. |
